Natures Decay and Rebirth

Natures Decay and Rebirth

Autumn sun warm on the balcony
The air was feigning grief
In the park the old oak tree
Dropped a single leaf

Hot coffee cup taken in hand
The leaves all golden brown
Nothing to do but stare and stand
Another slowly drifting down

The ground beneath was beckoning
Each crusty leaf to succumb
To meet their lifetime reckoning
Their living work been done

In flurries soon they’ll break away
Surrendering without a moan
Content to draw in every stray
The earth makes them her own

Time will pass, years go by
New growth will spring up high
Soil enriched with pure supply
By all that has to die

The sun was beating warm that day
My coffee cold.

Autumn. A season where nature goes into hibernation, where death is certain so Spring can bring life. You've captured it so well, Richard. Congratulations on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

A warm fall day is perfect setting for this piece - millions of falling leaves in a park sparked deep thoughts. Third stanza my favorite. I like the thought of your coffee turning cold during your muse. Great POTD.

Hello Richard, Congrats on POTD. O' the slow surrender of leaves, the stillness of standing, the cold coffee as time’s final punctuation, wonderful. I thought your last line sealed it beautifully. Autumn Blessings, Richard, Daniel

The old red maple was blushing before I read this to her. After I read it to her I swear I heard a gentle chuckle amid the leaves. Beautifully done Richard.

Hi Anne-Lise, Thanks for the comment, it’s not for the contest, it does not comply with the rules Constance laid out, but I’ll honour her inspiration by still using the title. Take care, Richard
