Nailing a Bench

Nailing a bench is like getting a spot For your car, but instead it’s your tush That will reap the rewards, but in either case it Does require some luck and a push. For you cannot relax when you’re out on a hunt; You must focus and force yourself on. If you pause or let something distract you, well, then, When you look up, your spot will be gone. For the car, it must be the right side of the street; For the bench, it must be in the shade But when you are in luck and you score a good spot, Then you’ll feel like your day has been made!

Ilene, remarkably ever piece you have posted has been in rhyme (perfectly rhymed, also) and that is quite an achievement . Your Limericks are in perfect meter, and always witty. I couldn't comment on all ,so I picked this piece you posted last month (my birthday)- Not many benches occupied these days of social distancing. You write onnnnn... Seán.

What a lovely comment to receive this morning, Sean! Yes, I am addicted to writing in rhyme, despite the fact that rhyming poems are often not considered “real poetry.” ~ In New York City, with little private outdoor space, benches are coveted and many times you can’t find an empty one. ~ A belated happy birthday! We find a nice place to sit down. And hope a creep don't make us frown. Someone who stinks and a bit crass. Who ends up just a total ass. And makes your spot no longer wanted. As we get up and leave, and feel just a bit taunted.

Ha, ha! Reminds me of an old Jackie Mason joke: :You know how they advertise resorts for the WASPs -- 'Brand new tennis courts; Olympic-size pool...' And for the Jews: 'Brand new lounge chairs... ' " LOL! We have reached that pinnacle in life, I guess: 'Nailing a Bench.' Great sense of humor, ilene! Fun in the Shade, Gershon

I can see you in your trenchcoat and sunglasses, looking to the right and to the left, to see who is watching before you make a beeline to the right spot Ilene.

With everone keeping their distance I bet its even harder to find a bench. Didnt know that anout the parking, I've learnt something today. Cant remember the last time I saw a street cleaner in our road. Tom

Delightful composition of that magical moment! Though I imagine our UK friends will be wondering why we would want a park on the right side? Another sweet vignette ~ John

Thank you, John. I should have explained the parking rules in New York City - we have to move our cars from one side of the street to the other a few times a week so that streets can be cleaned. It’s always great to get a spot on the right (correct) side so you don’t have to move it the next day...

oh what relief to find a bench to sit on - its amazing that something that I take for granted on our little Island would be the focus of a poem for you:-) hugs jan xx

Yes, one of the downsides of living in a big city - you have to fight (or be lucky) to get things that don’t require such efforts in other places. I always felt that the trade-off was worth it, but since the pandemic I’m no longer convinced that that is the case...
