My Spiritual Journey
with folded hands paying respects to the rising Sun
in the orange glow, with my mother, day has begun,
bowing our heads to one who energises the world
learned by imitation, prayed God as I was told.
walking around the deity in a clockwise turn,
applying dot of ash to forehead from temple urn,
reciting holy sanskrit prayers chanting a bhajan,
have hindu identity, initiation done!
religion taught to us through stories with deep morals,
evil was condemned and the good always won laurels,
conflict of duty, respect, conscience and honesty,
condemnation of gambling, theft, lies and cruelty.
my teenage was spent in search of self identity,
with romance brewing, god was not a necessity,
I questioned every religious barrier thrown in,
a time for introspection, God’s denial and sin.
when was years older with friends of different beliefs,
accepted, adopted from their religion some leaves,
all with same truth, same messages with no difference,
in matters of beliefs, had no special preference!
decades from that day of a loud cry and single breath,
God followed with no real understanding or true depth,
now I know and fully believe in oneness of God,
I completely ignore religious bigots and fraud!
Like it is with me I believe it is with others,
get initiated to religion by mothers,
we journey through life with introspection and science,
But God awaits, not our religion but clear conscience!
