My Grandma

My grandma was not, at all, an attractive woman She was, as a matter of fact, rather common She was short and broad, which made her obese But, she was never reluctant to say her piece Her face was chiseled like the Egyptian sphinx From her long, braided hair she combed out the kinks She was blinded during childhood in her left eye Was, to my knowledge, never known to tell a lie As I recall, there was not a real tooth in her head At meals, she always laid out a handsome spread She was the best granny a kid could ever have Told me many things that gave me a belly laugh Whatever she lacked in physical appearance She made up for from her years of experience All in all, she was quite a formidable dame In our community everyone knew her name Though when I was young, she seemed rather old My sweet grandma had a heart of pure gold.

Nothing like a grandma with a heart of gold! I have 10 grandchildren and you can ask them. "Was, to my knowledge, never known to tell a lie" But they will also all nod their heads if you ask if I lie.

LOL. Which way do they nod? Thanks for your comment on my poem. I'm sure they know their grandma is always truthful with them!

Hello Milton … to us kids, granny was granny. Anything physical had no bearing on me. But your poem had me thinking back and that’s why I totally enjoyed your poem - thank you Milton - Lindsay

Thank you, Lindsay. The poem grew out of my younger brother saying to me recently, "You know, our grandma was really ugly!" I was aghast. I started jotting ideas for this tribute to Grandma, who would have wanted it told like it was. She knew she was ugly, but I knew she was the most beautiful woman in the world...truly!

Nice tribute to your grandma. I like how you don't 'air-brush' her at all. You told it like it is, Milt -- the only way to go, in my book. Smiles, Gershon

Gershon, she's been gone a long time, but she would have got a chuckle out of my poem. She was always encouraging. Thanks for stopping by and reading about Grandma!

Oh, I'm sure she did, Ilene. She knew how much I adored her. She was always there for me, and so, I was always there for her. Thanks so much. Milt

What a beautiful tribute poem, whether true in part or not at all; words well put together. I love the half rhyme "have" and "laugh". It also made me think a bit of course, but that saying, "Don't respect old age; respect wisdom." I think it was an old Chinese saying, not saying that as a cliche hahaha. Thanks.

Thanks, Marcela. It was all true, believe me. I couldn't have written such a tribute from fiction, I don't think. Glad you stopped to read it.

Happy memories L. Milton of a dear grandmother. They always knew what to do in a crisis and made delicious apple pies. Tom

Yes. Mine could make the best fried apple pies for school lunch. She was a gem! Thanks for stopping by.

She sounds like a wonderful grandmother, Milton. It doesn't matter how she looks; she made you laugh and feel special. Funny how our perspective of "old" changes as we age. I used to watch my grandmother brush her very long hair. Unfortunately, I seem to resemble her, but I loved her just as your loved your grandmother. (They do make the best food, don't they?) Hugs, Carolyn

Thanks, Carolyn. I'd say our grandmothers had something in common. They were both very special!

Gran made pierogies and kruschicki. Can't find these Polish treats in stores.
