My Father Never Went to War

Good timing or fate Destiny or pure dumb luck Karma or God’s Grace Born in 1909, he was too young for WWI and had way too many mouths to feed by the time WWII came along. He never expressed his opinion on war. Perhaps his constant battle with poverty kept him too busy to even care. You’d think that with fifteen kids spread across the course of twenty-four years, one of us would’ve hit the unlucky lottery. It appears though that with the luck of our father, combined with the poor health genes provided by our mother, not a single one of us had to take up arms against a foreign enemy.

Hello Jerry, I guess your grandparents were happy to have him by their side. Wars aren’t nice, still it seems we haven’t learnt much from them. Stay Blessed my friend.

Very lucky for your family. With the length of time involved that is hard odds to beat. I was drafted in 1971 but joined the Air Force instead and the war ended not long after.

i would say you were all very lucky, jerry! my dad fought in wwII and never spoke of it, but we learned to tiptoe around him when we had to wake him up from a nap, because he always jumped up and yelled as if he were still in a foxhole. i can't imagine it not taking its toll on anyone who had to experience being in combat...
