Dad died on 12-28-98, I wrote this the next morn, 12-29-98. The words therapy-poured from me.

DEDICATED TO MY FATHER, WILLIAM CASON GODWIN / 1931 - 1998

My voice is weak, my hand falters
as I attempt to speak of my Father.
Each night sleep takes me,
                  then truth awakes me –
my Dad is gone, now dead.
My heart hears this from my head.
Wrapped in numbness, walking in nothingness,
I search for his presence.

The chain’s now broken, its brightest link gone.
My Dad was security and so mentally strong.
His mind quick, his wit sharp,
he always inspired my young heart.
Pleasing my Father was to lasso the sun.
In him my pride was first begun.

I picture his hands, legs and arms –
my protector from harm;
wisdom was his voice,
                  comforting his every choice,
willpower his motto, sureness his step.
He was a man of incredible depth.
Knowing I am my Father’s daughter
is a thought to be tenderly kept.
His final, “I love you” words,
the most emotion I’ve heard yet.

I will miss you, Daddy.
Now and forever, naught will I forget.
I’ll see you each sunrise,
mourn you each sunset.
Images crash around me,
I’d have it no other way
Than your memory with
                 me each and every day.

CayCay, I can empathize. I lost my dad in '86. He was in intensive care and I had to come from Arizona to Missouri, ending up in a blizzard. It took me 20 hours to get to his bedside. I got to take his hand, tell him I was there, and that I loved him. There was the faintest squeeze of my hand and he was gone. I still miss him, and you know what? He is still teaching me things today that I remembered as a boy. I'm sorry for your loss, and it makes this poem even more meaningful. Hugs, Ron

CayCay sweet soul what a trauma you went through and what a trauma our respective children will go through one day - it is like the end of the world has come! There is no replacement - I see you inherited your fathers wit! I still think of my Dad every day - he died at at the age of 66, 22 years ago. Living is to finally grief, but too sad to think like that - I think that is why our poems are earthy and life-like because the are about life. Love you, Jenny

I can see him in your words, CayCay. He must have been very close to you. Terrific portrait of him. Good luck in the contest. One thing...first line of the second verse. You mean to say "its" not "it" right?

Thank you so much for pointing that out - once a typo is realized, it glares at me! So glad you felt comfortable telling me and I hope it stays that way. We weren't as close as I would have liked, but we loved each other greatly and we lost him way too soon from Agent Orange. He died at 68 and every word I wrote is true. Thank you for commenting ... A treasure to find this poem this morn. I lost my dad when I was 15 years old-it utterly destroyed me! So much so that even at age 61 now, its a hard subject to write about. I see you summoned up great courage to do so (quite splendidly I might add), maybe I can too.A7

You relate. When one loses their Father, it is like they join the Gone Father Club. This wrote itself a few days after he made his transition as my therapy. How I miss him. I thank you for your warm and kind comments ... CayCay

"I will miss you, Daddy. Now and forever, naught will I forget. I’ll see you each sunrise, Mourn you each sunset." It's so true about seeing your daddy in the sunrise and mourn him in the sunset. To me this means, the morning you feel fresh and awake ready for the new day (sunrise) but as evening comes you've had all day with thoughts of our loved one..so because of that, we mourn at sunset. Perfectly said. *smiles* -luloo
