My Encyclopedia Days

The weighty volumes lined up row on row, A universe of knowledge waiting to bestow Its secrets vast in bindings strong and deep, A silent promise, wisdom it would keep. Remember pulling one so thick and grand, Its gilded lettering, a treasure in your hand. The smell of paper old and slightly musty, A journey waiting scholarly and trusty. The careful turning of each thin crisp page, Lost in the details of a bygone age. Illustrations etched in black and white so fine, Bringing to life a creature or a distant shrine. The cross-references, a path you could explore, From "Astronomy" to "Ancient Folklore." A web of learning patiently unfurled, Connecting concepts throughout the printed world. No instant search, no click to find your quest, But diligent seeking putting knowledge to the test. The satisfaction found in finally locating, The answer sought, no further hesitating. Projects for school, a lifeline and a friend, Hours spent poring until the very end. Tracing diagrams, copying facts with care, Building understanding layer by careful layer. The feeling of accomplishment, when research was complete, A sense of mastery, undeniably sweet. Those leather spines, a testament to time, A wealth of learning in their structured prime. Now screens illuminate with answers at our call, But nothing matches that slow, deliberate crawl Through pages bound, a tangible embrace, The Encyclopedia's wisdom leaving its timeless trace. ©bfa040625
