My Dream Within a Dream
"Finding a dream within the nightmare
is sometimes the hardest part."
~ S. Roebbeke
I cried myself awake.
Not for a moment longer
could I sleep through the ache and pain
of my dream within a dream.
It began as a loving night,
dimly lit by candlelight.
He betrothed me his heart
and then it started to rain.
Suddenly, the room was dark!
I was left on the edge
of loneliness, and he was gone.
If 'twas to be a reverie,
this dream within a dream
is one I'd gladly forsake.
I prayed this one would fade away
if it meant I'd be without him.
I close my eyes each night
fearing simultaneous dreams.
I do not seek self-reflection
for too often dreams take flight
raising questions and perceptions.
I cannot guide my dreams
onto a path I would choose,
nor away from nightmares.
They come unbidden while I sleep.
