Some parts of life are permanent, alas, some aspects not: The morning temperature feels chill; by midday it grows hot. The money spent on cell phones' long-term value which I sought, Too soon is gone, as more is spent on upgrades I've since bought. The sun in its celestial course yields light, black night, or shade. Old years tossed out with calendars as fire's embers fade. Some friendships evanesce, forgetting promises we'd made Our children grow and move away, as hair grows thinned and greyed. Staunch boughs of trees are shaken by harsh winds, enduring long. 'That time of year thou mayest in me behold'; thy love's more strong. You've been my life's sweet constant as we harmonize our song - One truth is undeniable: in your arms I belong.
// Dedicated to Janet, my loving bride of 35 years //

Love this John. A very clever write. The themes of growing older and the strength of real love are explored by use of metaphors: Autumn / winter (boughs of trees shaken by harsh winds), the passing of time (calenders) and dying of a fire (embers) Great read.

Yes, you're right Gershon, she did love it. She loves attending Shakespeare plays then afterwards explaining to me everything I missed! Thank you for the kind words, my friend.

Always nice to know of other lovers of Shakespeare's sonnets, Edward! Number 73 is a beauty, up there in my 3 faves of his.

It is a wonderful thing to know that husbands still write tender poems to their wives (of 35 years!) I love the humor in the beggining that merges into the more serious part of the verse. Great contrast and flow! Congrats on your first place win! Blessing to both of you!

This is worthy of Shakespeare himself! At my wedding, we had a reading of Sonnet 116 'let me not to the marriage of true minds..' but I love this one, as it is about how love, like wine, grows deeper and more nuanced over time. Congratulations on 35 years with your lovely bride!

How nice to know you had 116 read at your wedding! It is so beautiful, and one of my 3 favorites of his (29, 73, 116), though many others are near misses. He was why I fell in love with the sonnet form many years ago. Honestly, I enjoy his sonnets much more than his plays... how very lowbrow of me! Thanks for the kind words, I hope you can meet my bride sometime when you visit!
