Mothers Love

The sweat was still upon my brow as I lay in my bed Then one last push, a rush of pain and I could see your head My last contraction hit me and then you were here at last A perfect tiny daughter to blot out my troubled past I loved from the instant that your eyes looked at my face The tears slipped from my own eyes unchecked while my heartbeat raced Your perfect tiny fingers right down to your minute toes The tuft of hair upon your head, your tiny button nose And as I held you to my breast I understood that I Would love you unconditionally till the day I die My pride was such that I could not release you to your crib I felt the need to hold you nestled close against my rib All the bad things went away I was consumed with love I rocked you gently in my arms and thanked the Lord above I felt the joy within my heart first joy I'd ever felt I made a vow that I'd protect you from the pain life dealt My heart is bursting with love and joy for the best reasons I watched with fascination as you grew with every season Day by day my love for you is stronger fuelling a deep need To nurture and protect you, keep you safe from all life's greed Jane Shields 27th July 2016

This was written about my first child, born in 1981. Sadly myt PTSD has intervened in our relationship over recent years, but it's wonderful to know I was capable to love and still can. xx
