Moonstone
Are you a tear that a slighted goddess shed,
dropped to the ground from eons past
and preserved forever the sorrow
of her grieving heart?
Or is your muted glow
a ray of moonlight held captive
so that we may gaze upon it, confident
that it will not vanish when the sun shines?
Or perhaps it is not a light at all
encased in stone, but the same melody
that the sirens sang, sending sailors to madness,
until the gods saw it fit to contain
its beauty that it may no longer
bring men to the brink of lunacy.
It must be you in the ill-fated poet’s mind
when he in one of his romantic moods sang,
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
For such you are--a delight to behold,
inviting to be touched yet holding back
a mystery that enthralls.
