Notes About The Poem

Author’s Notes: “Meretricious Spirit” is a Didactic write I completed on October 11, 2016. I consider this one to be a rather straight-forward narrative. It both says what it means and means what it says. This particular theme was one that had been in the back of my mind for a while. I believe that most of us, if not all of us, have been in certain meretricious-like situations with other people, when some them are less-than-authentic and present themselves, at times, in accordance with certain negative attitudes or behaviors reflected by: pretense, deception, vulgarity, insincerity, unfounded bias, childishness, and superficiality – to name a few. And there are certainly others that could be added to this list as well. I believe my teaching point here with this Didactic is principally captured by the following three verses (Verses 13-15) in this poem: “Always follow your life’s passion and / the spiritual heart and tenor of your soul / for they shall be your true moral compass.” At least, this is my take, when I ponder some of the rather unique situations and circumstances we can all find ourselves in from time-to-time with other people when we’re confronted, unfortunately, by some of these less-than-savory aspects of human nature and behavior. Something to think about! (Gary Bateman – October 22, 2016) (Didactic)

Meretricious Spirit

Meretricious Spirit

This spirit is modern society’s cancer
Replete with rank, flashy vulgarities
Pervading our social fabric and soul
Unbridled, unbowed, unapologetic;
It can be a curse to mankind itself
Engulfing some people in moments
Of childish deception and insincerity
Which challenge our human civility;
Petulance, at times, can be seen to
“Rule the Roost” in certain personal
Interactions to make each of us seem
To be less than who we truly are in life;
Always follow your life’s passion and
The spiritual heart and tenor of your soul,
For they shall be your true moral compass
As you face the daily slings and arrows of
This life as mankind’s fabulistic tendencies
Seek to tarnish one’s very spirit and worth
In this thing we all call—our mortal coil!

Thanks Dear Anne-Lise for your greetings and note!! And best greetings to you and your family too!! The theme I touched on in this Didactic is actually something I don't take lightly. This type of attitude-behavior does greatly affect the quality and meaningfulness of the kind of discourse we have modern societies today. I guess, in this sense, I'm kind of a traditionalist about good manners and appropriate behavior. Anyway, I'm pleased you liked this write. I also think that poets should speak out at times on issues that deal with some of the outrageous follies and vanities that negatively affect mankind. Best Wishes Always, Gary
