Melting Shadows
MELTING SHADOWS
See their shadows melt away
See their shadows melt away
All these wooden figures
How do they turn shadows?
All these wooden figures
Why are they all hollow?
She walks in the maddening crowd alone
searching the way she has lost forlorn
to the sunshine meadow
nobody holds her hands now
She stands like a wayside tree hollow
slim shadow lengthens in sunset glow
doesn’t reach where the home stood
Why has she turned into a wood ?
All these wooden figures
How do they turn shadows?
All these wooden figures
Why are they all hollow?
The gleam of twilight hours fading away
she finds her home for the old
she turns into a faceless figure grey
Why does a shadow have a number rolled?
In the shade of leaves she built her nest dainty
in the shadow of broken wings frayed
she finds the nest empty
chicks have all flown away
All these wooden figures
How do they turn shadows?
All these wooden figures
Why are they all hollow?
She soared high like cloud in the blue sky
until the rainstorm surged on
the lone shadow started to melt by and by
Where have all the dreams gone?
She made footprints on time's shifting shore
found many people following her
she traces now the lone trail to graveyard
takes her shadow for ultimate rest homeward
All these wooden figures
see their shadows melt away
How do they turn shadows?
All these wooden figures
see their shadows melt away
Why are they all hollow?
