Notes About The Poem

Melancholic Melodies

Surrounded by strange blank faces,
pianist plays a medley of melancholic melodies,
magnifying our sorrows, as we close our eyes.

Just one more, before I leave,
yet I wonder, should we stay or should we go,
for the heart has no desire for trodden paths.

Those who claim to care, remain careless,
ignorant to the sacrifices - suffocating the dream.
We wonder if they will ever understand,
so we remain miserable and misunderstood,
wasting away in the smell of regret

manipulated by melancholic melodies,
each note a reminder how time has lost its charm.

Always seen as the sinner,
my shadow has become a fugitive.
I wonder how far I can run,
but we're chained by judgement,
in the expectation of traditional responsibilities.

Which fool claimed life is simple?
With so many complications, we ponder what is the point.
Yet we smile, pretend we are content,
crying without tears, jealous of happiness,
wondering why it eludes us.

It's too late to edit my story.
Unafraid of drowning or burning,
I've become numb - immune to infliction.

I struggle to recognise my reflection,
so I search for a silent serenade,
away from an orchestra of rambunctiousness,
awaiting the freedom of death

to finally be free from melancholic melodies.

It’s curious how Dark art draws us in so readily. This piece is an example. When we are depressed listening to sad music helps with the healing process. To get past our pain we must allow ourselves to feel and luxuriate in it for a while. Society instead wants to cheer us up and thus we paint on a smile and participate in the charade. This is well expressed, should we be concerned?

I lost a tear while reading this very touching poem, that pulled at my heart. You can really get at the core of every poem and every subject you write about...you were my first contact on here and I hope to (some day) be as well versed as you. Vickie

Thanks for sharing this truthful reflection, poetically expressed. (Meanwhile, though we wonder sometimes why happiness eludes us, we can be blessed to experience the joy that God grants with His grace.) Thanks likewise for my placement in your recently judged contest. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate them. God bless you.

It is difficult not to look back at life and eat one's own heart. The older we get, the more the wrongs we commit (and those committed against us, though we forgive) stand out. Age brings wisdom, but it is also a stereoscopic view beneath the surface of our past. Great write, my friend. Outstanding poetry and deep thought.

What a title. An Oxymoron in the beginning created a great impact. I am impressed. struggle to recognise my reflection, What a line! Very well use of visual imagery. Really we should enjoy our misery. I felt overwhelmied. There was a great set back in my life too. Now I am feeling whatever was done that time was better. Your poem taught me to be brave. Good poem with quality literary devices. And, thanks for the compliment you posted for my Monorhyme.

So sorry for the twisted fate and agony of the souls perilous journey. Some wake and live with a cup full some with a cup empty. I am lucky to have a heart and soul of love. I will pray for you SO in your moments of darkness a star shall shine sorry for your torture. Kelli

So deep in a sad but beautiful way. Reminds me of my song Melancholy melody! This has a dire tone to it, a desperation to find happiness and meaning. Loved it SO (why are we so drawn to melancholy?)
