       A racist nation
       God-forsaken
       Irreparably divided
         with enmity
         and contempt
           ~ for all

It is amazing just how much babies and little kids will naturally love those around them. As a young adult, my best teachers of a foreign language, the most patient too, were little kids...And I know how much parents influence children, seeing just how much I influenced my two oldest kids, who, thanks to an early divorce, grew up almost without me. The other influences you mentioned can also be huge, of course. Peer group (pressure) is a big influence too. Hard for so many to buck the prevailing biases of the group...
