Notes About The Poem

Love gone wrong can damage a sensitive soul. People who have obsessive compulsive tendencies may experience spontaneous and distracting intrusive thoughts long after a rejection. The protagonist in the accompanying video where the guitar seems to repeat “uh oh,”  might need help. Sad to say, the means to inhibit annoying and long-lasting unwanted spontaneous thoughts does not come easily. Suggestion, go slow and understand strong and immediate attraction might signal a warning.

love can hurt

Like sharks can fixate on a mark
Trolling hearts may strike something dark
Better to repair
Any inner despair
Before the snare of a love spark

My heart has never healed since my wife passed away. Duke were you a Beatles fan, I still have every record they made, Paul McCartney has his office not far from where I live in Soho square in London.

Hi Duke, most of my poems regarding my dear wife are on Familyfriendpoems, I'm also a moderator on there.

John, your wife was probably a wonderful companion, and my heart hurts for that loss. It's certainly painful, but you can tell me some of the things she did and what she was like...and I would listen and appreciate. If you have any specific poems about her, also please point me to those. I definitely am a quiet Beatles fan. I still play some of the songs I consider favorites during the day and sometimes before I go to sleep. BTW, sounds like you live in a nice area! FYI I am in my 70's. Hope you are well!!

Some hearts are akin to blood in the water for love-sharks swimming in pool of tropical humuhumunukunukuapua'a. :o))

Arlo, yes it can be a bloody game if we go swimming. Hard to know what's in store sometimes, but we risk it for the possibility of something special...or maybe just to satisfy our animal desires if we are like the sharks. I prefer kindness at every depth. Smiles!!!

Rather know life in the past with nostalgia than in the present with regret - sensitive wistful and a spark of fun to it. Blessings, Jennifer.

Great point Jennifer. We want to avoid feeling badly about what was in the past and use anything learned back then to have a better present and future. Your comment is on target and makes me smile!

I see from your comment below you are concerned in case I have stress . Everything is same old same old. Hubbie being refused back surgery by workers comp, etc etc My poetry lately may sound like I am haunted by ghosts, but don't worry. It was all for poetic effect!

Thanks Karen. We sometimes get carried away in matters of the heart. Especially when young. It leaves some pretty significant recurring memories.

I know all too well, the pangs of a broken heart and it seems that I remember in those early days falling "in love" every other weekend! Good advice Duke in your limerick! So well done!! Happy Friday!!

Thanks Mike, I think it's something that happens to sensitive people with a certain personality type. Not really a bad thing. Just part of life as an advanced ape. Hope you are well, sir!!

The protagonist in the accompanying video where the guitar seems to repeat “uh oh,” might need help...Too funny! Love that with a smile as I played the song. Even in love I see politics...(red & blue hearts) amazing images. I'd like to add that red & blue make purple a color for a third party. Well, this one is about love and I hope you get all you need, Duke!

Anaya, I also see politics everywhere. My mind can't escape it so I know what you mean. Since we deal with emotion and quirks of fancy in poetry, we can't help notice that certain candidates have weird mental disorders and need to be institutionalized. The guitar line in the video has some subtleties other than the uh oh, but it takes a careful ear to listen to what they did. I find it unusual. You are very kind and I am one of the luckiest people on this planet since I do have a great partner--almost 47 years now. It's really nice. We may have disagreements, but discuss them and compromise or adjust--like normal people (KH or TW) would do with their partners.

Thanks Darlene, I am well. The memories of the past might be annoying at times, but there is a way to brush them aside when they interfere with the present. It takes a lot of mental processing to try to reorganize one's outlook! Smiling and sending smiles your way!

Kim, yes a very wise idea. We need to know what we are getting into for sure. There are certainly many novels, short stories, poems, and films about relationship troubles!

Nette, you are very kind to say that. Yes, life does not give us everything we want. I think how we respond to disappointment reveals a lot about our character. I'm thinking there are some people who have not learned this lesson, and that's too bad for them really. You're making me smile.

Hello Duke, So well said in a well written limerick. When you get our age and have had your heart broken somewhere in the past by those sharks, you gain a great of wisdom very quickly. However, there are those who never learn! I always worried about my daughters when they were dating, and each one did have a shark. Now they are married to wonderful men who love and deeply respect them. - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Daniel, you are so very kind and thoughtful. I am glad your daughters escaped the awful bite. I picked a shark as an example since it acts without thought and just through instinct. We hope to be better than that!!! I acted like a shark when I was young...with a well meaning heart, and I didn't see I was setting myself up for serious trouble. Our minds and thinking patterns may not suit us well for situations we encounter, but they give us an opportunity to learn how to be normal and civil going forward.

Aysha, if we can smile we're way ahead of a lot of people from an emotional standpoint. We are really so very lucky to have the ability to analyze and reason the way we do, but looking back, I think I did some pretty crazy things. That's all part of gaining experience and becoming the person we are now. Your smile is making me smile.

Thanks SO, I just read your, “I need your love” poem, which is wonderful. I always worry about the balance between reasonable need and too much need. Love is such an interesting topic. You have so many great insights. You’re making me smile internally. Really thanks!!! My goodness. I would find the dating scene fascinating today, but I am committed to wife fortunately. She’s super!!!

Oh dear duke you did deliver a very wise and profound limerick on love. I really must note that i love the picture youv generated and it goes so well with what youv said. And i agree we must learn to heal before we let another in or start something new as it can cause problems. Beautiful rhymes too I especially love “ Like sharks can fixate on a mark Trolling hearts may strike something dark” clever and strong opening! Love this! Pleasure reading this side of you too. Sending you light

IE, you are very insightful. You make me smile. Love and attraction are wonderful when it’s a mutual construction. However, there are some dangers when one-sided, and for those who lust and pine, it could do strange things to our brain. I was never diagnosed with OCD, but I believe I have it. So this comes from my own unwelcome feelings and experiences. It’s all a strange thing that happens…in my own case, the person became a TV personality and that just adds to the intrusion. It seems crazy to me. Lol!!!
