To My Darling Unborn Child Today I signed papers that would allow you to be brought up by a loving family who desperately wanted a child just like you. Please don’t think that I relinquish all rights to you, because I didn’t love you or because I was selfishly thinking of myself. It wasn’t out of neglect. I can’t think of anything nicer than being able to bring you up in a loving family and buy you nice things, but my darling, that wouldn’t happen. I only knew your father briefly before he was shipped to Afghanistan, and know little about his family background. It was only because I had included my return address on a letter he had with him, that another soldier used it to write to me telling me he was DOA at the base hospital some weeks before. I was orphaned when I was 6 years old and spent ten years in an orphanage. I have no relations, and I don’t want you going through a succession of foster homes as I did. In all probability you will be born this week. I have asked that the family that adopts you give you this letter as soon as you are old enough to begin asking about your birth mother. Honestly, I don’t think we should meet. I would be a disappointment to you and by then you will have a wonderful mother who loves you more than I can only imagine. She will have cared for you when you were ill, taught you manners, and one million things more. She will be the only mother you will ever know. I won’t send you Christmas and birthday gifts, as that only confuses things, but be assured I will be thinking of you on those days, and probably many more days too. Always darling one, be the best you can be. It is important to be happy and have fun and not to get angry. Think about what is about to make you angry, take a minute to sort it out, stay calm, you will feel better and be in a better frame of mind to fix the problem. Have as little as possible to do with people that make you angry. Make time for fun. Stay happy, smile as much as you can. Enjoy the little things when there are no big things to enjoy. Practice overcoming the bad times with positive thoughts and find something to laugh at. Even if you cant find anything, just have a good laugh at yourself. When some one is mean to you, walk away and find a butterfly to marvel at or look up at the clouds or the rain falling or the stars, or the wind tossing leaves about. No time for sadness HAVE FUN. Create a wonderful memory EVERY DAY.

Such a beautiful, sensitive heart stirring write. I know someone who gave her baby up to adoption, and then he sort her out when grown, and he, she, and the adopted mother and father are all the best friends. So, it was the right decision for everyone involved. Great, inspiring read.

Thanks for your kind and understanding words. I too knew someone who gave a baby up for adoption. She wasn't even told if the babe was a girl or a boy. Not the same circumstances as I described. 21 years later the girl sought her out. It turned out unbeknown to each of them, their paths had crossed before, but they chose not to keep in touch. Maybe that's a story for a non fiction poem some time. Best wishes Joe. SV

Your ability to consistently astonish me with your captivating, bewildering, and awe-inspiring expressions never ceases to amaze. This composition possesses a profound emotional depth, evoking a sense of heartache and providing vivid descriptions, all while offering invaluable insights into the fundamental principles for achieving happiness and leading a purposeful existence. I am confident that when the recipient, as an adult, reads this letter, they will undoubtedly cherish the fact that they were fortunate enough to be born to a mother who possesses such a generous and compassionate spirit. I have no doubt that any lingering resentment towards their biological mother will be absent, as your words have truly done justice to this intricate topic.

This definitely made me emotional.. Sigh, what a heart-aching letter, hued with myriad symphonies of a mother to her unborn child, whom she will be letting go for the child's own welfare. The has rendered me completely speechless.. I love how you dived into the depths of feelings and questionings whilst truly bringing out the words, that a mother would carve in a letter, in such situation.. Soul stirring.. Yet with so much blooming aura and positive manifestation. Incredible, I love this~

Hiya what a charming young lady you are! Your comment is so eloquent, it makes me smile. I humbly enjoy your comment as I would a poem written by yourself. My thanks is most abundant. Best wishes SV

Very rare to come across this kind of taboo subject, but you’re a freethinking poet SV and take up the challenge, you do a pretty good job to cover all future answers for the child’s questions, will it be enough, probably not, but it’s about as much as any child in this position will get, yes I believe you’ve done this difficult theme justice, cheers David

The way I see it David, if it depicts some form of life, its worthy of a poem. I think if tastefully approached, any subject can become poetry. I am very fond of your thoughtful comment. Is anything ever enough to the inquisitive mind of a child or moreover, a teenager??? heheheh. Thank you for your comment David, it is very much appreciated.

What a lovely letter. The last para is a gem containing the golden rules to stay happy and lead a meaningful life. I am sure the child when grown up reads this letter will only be happy to have been born to a mother with such largesse of heart. I am sure she won't have any resentment for her real mother. "Think about what is about to make you angry, take a minute to sort it out, stay calm, you will feel better and be in a better frame of mind to fix the problem." ..... so very true. A hasty reaction can often misfire.

Not even sure why I wrote all this Valsa. One of those posts that I sat down to write and my fingers typed without me having much input. Totally fictional. Maybe I have watched too much television. Thank you for your comment dear friend, as always, its treasured.
