Lest we Forget the Horses

When the world practises Tao,
horses fertilize the fields.
When the world ignores Tao,
horses are bred for war.
The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu

 Lest We Forget the Horses

Time speaks of history
a vast and empty sadness
washes over me
watching old newsreels
Highstepping horses,
gentle eyes transformed in fear
valiantly charging
under men that could not yield

Amid the noise of cannons
their beauty- gently haunting
Spirited, obedient, valiant
they charge over the
death-filled battle-field

Now the faded image shows
a glory past and gone
Yet we must remember them
And how their courage shone

Sides flecked with foam, obedient spirits,
so far from home, hoofbeats pound,
crested necks, high dancing steps,
with jingling bridles they rush as one,
hearts bursting, falling in their stride,
somehow they know how desperate
 is this final, fatal charge

Faded film of ages gone
Lest we forget the horses
or the majesty of them
Lest we forget them
or the men who spurred them on

In solemn re-enactment
we must remember them.

I am an amateur historian and this piece was right up my ally. Truly an exquisite poem. I loved each and every line. Crow

Hello Suzanne... your poem is very moving and wonderfully written. If you get the chance to hear Eric Bogle's song - as if they know - you will hear a connection. I truly enjoyed your poem Suzanne - Lindsay

Hello Lindsay: Thanks so much for you comment today and for reading. I will look up that song and get back to you. In an ever more automated world we need to glorify the beauty of and our connection to horses. SuZ

This appeals to me in two different ways: my love for the movie War Horse, and my always-leaning-towards-pacifism state of mind. You, my friend, know how to draw someone in to read your poetry.... that title is AWESOME!

I loved that movie too. In Australia we still celebrate the history of the war horses. Did you see Gallipoli the movie. Here is a link to the website for the Australian light Brigade. http://www.lighthorse.org.au/

Dear Suz, this poem is so beautifully written. Our world would be so different without the help, strength, loyalty and love horses have provided. Your tribute to them is a beautiful reminder of our debt to these wonderful creatures who have been a blessing in our lives. Another of your poems going into my favorite file. Thank you for honoring them so. #7

Dear Suzanne, I'm a great lover of horses and your poem gave me both goose bumps and tears. Horses are usually very gentle creatures who bond with humans easily. It pains me to think of all the horses, as well as all the people, who have lost their lives on the battlefield. Heartbreaking and beautiful write! Best wishes, Carolyn

Wonderful. This poem reminds me of the movies War Horse and Hidalgo. In this age of trucks and tanks we forget that man once relied on living breathing animals to carry them.

Hi Monteray: I think we have often fallen down in the advocacy that God charged us with. Hope you are well. SuZ
