Last Night
We stay up late,
laying in the yard
eagerly looking north
to see the comet passing.
Eventually we drive up the hill
above the valley lights
to sit and watch the dark sky.
Stars everywhere up there,
and planets too.
At last I see the faint hazy glow of the comet’s tail,
and we take turns looking through binoculars.
You and me,
like on a date,
up at the end of a dirt road.
We don’t kiss, we don’t even hold hands,
but when you exclaim with innocent delight
how marvelous it all is -
the comet, the heavens, the planets, this planet -
I think, I could spend a life with you.
