Last Breath - Summer

“To say it was a beautiful day would not begin to explain it. It was that day when the end of summer intersects perfectly with the start of fall.”

– Ann Patchett

Summers last breath quickens my heart
My longing gasp to hold the warmth
Against my skin as you leave

Whispered farewell the geese fly south
I skip stones from a lonely shore
Trade long days for sunset colors

                            Welcome fall’s crispy open door

"I skip stones from a lonely shore". Therein lies the crux of the matter, no chatter, now honk, no hum in the surrounding woods.....a muted silence precedes fall. Nicely done with a intriguing take on the theme an the form

Yes, it gets so quiet with all the kids back in school...even on the week ends...

'Trade long days for sunset colors' - what a perfect line, captures the end of summer so sweetly!

What a delightful poem this is, Jeanne! I don't like summer coming to an end, but autumn's colours compensate the loss of warm weather. ~ regards // paul
