Just Walking That Lonely Road

He walks the loneliest road
Where he's from is buried in snow
Where he's going, it's long ago
  Just walking that lonely road

Life didn't start out that way
Married his best girl on a sunny day
Never knew how love could betray
  Walking the loneliest road

Slammed the screen door, up and left town
On a plastered face, his mustachioed frown
He'd been high up -- he'd come all the way down
  Just walking that lonely road

The years went by, lines creased his face
His back bent from hard labor's disgrace
No longer could he keep up the pace
  Walking the loneliest road

One day they found him, not far from the road
His body stiff from alcohol's load
A stubborn man's death, not hard to decode
  Just walking that lonely road

"No longer could he keep up the pace Walking the loneliest road" this is poignant.

Sad, Life's journey for some is like this. While other's they can win the lottery 3 times. I guess this is the hand your dealt with in life. Well thought out poem ~ Debbie

I really like the phrase, "Mustachioned frown" and the recurring last line of each verse. A sad and deadly path to take, and sader still that so many choose it. Then again, they're many lessons alone that road. A poet friend, Bill

Mike, I had a melody in mind when I wrote it, a C&W type, but it drifted down that lonely road a ways, and now I can't get it back for the life of me. Thanks for the astute observation, and Season's Best, Gershon

Like walking in the dark blindfolded, it's impossible for anyone to envision fate's harsh judgement. Sadness in truth G.W. Peace...ab

No happy ending like came back on the rebound and new love found? Alas, very few can accept, shrug and move on. Great narrative here, Gershon
