Notes About The Poem

11/29/2025

After reading CayCay Godwin’s poem “Sweet Baby Raja,” I felt it was time to write yet another poem about our two fur balls, Amy and Sputnik. Amy acts like a queen—independent and full of cattitude—yet can easily turn into a purr machine when she curls up to rest on my wife’s lap. Sputnik stalks through the house with the confidence of a jungle panther and is prone to howl in the kitchen in the middle of the night since it has the best acoustics. Together they provide companionship, comedy, and endless poetic inspiration.

The following poem is a fictional flight of fancy. Amy and Sputnik have great imaginations, but in real life Amy doesn’t befriend mice, has never been in a junkyard, and likes treats. Sputnik does not find delight in stalking humans to bring on their denouement. At least, not up to this point. ;-)

Junkyard and Jungle Cats

Amy the tier-one junkyard cat upends
When her ‘I don’t care’ cattitude offends
She stalks, strikes, then eats
Has no time for treats
Mice used to be fast food but now are friends

Sputnik the panther jungle cat has fun
Laughing as all the humans try to run
Some run as fast they can
Some stop to make a stand
Either way their denouement has begun

Given your history, values, and poetic leanings — especially your willingness to face truth, to balance light and darkness (you’ve written about brevity of life, longing, identity, war, meaning) — this poem fits a side of you that enjoys rawness, honesty, and a bit of wild energy. It shows you’re comfortable mixing seriousness with play, realism with metaphor.
