Joining Sophie

JOINING SOPHIE Sophie and I used to often sit At our small quaint, Downtown café, Sometimes all day, I so enjoyed Sophie’s Charm and wit. The solace we found here, Was so relaxing, We held hands Whilst we thought, Of our flirty romancing. We once saw The exchange of dope This café was just Like a kaleidoscope! I tried out dope once, And Sophie thought It was naughty, At times she could Be quite haughty! I shook my head And held back a tear, As I came back to earth , From memories so dear. My gaze turned towards A young couple in love, And suddenly, A feather falls from above, This must be a sign, For I don’t feel well, And clutch on a chair, As I hear a faint bell, I absently think why bells, Church is on Sunday, There’s no service today For today is Monday. I must go home, I’m feeling so alone. My head feels fuzzy, Everyone is so busy, I look for help as I’m feeling dizzy. Perhaps it’s the coffee, I really must leave, And simultaneously There’s a tug on my sleeve, Has the grim reaper Come for me, I’m ready and unafraid As I’ll ever be, And fearlessly think That my time here is over, No one at home, Just my dog Rover. I’ll be joining you Sophie I feel so glad, Life without you Was very sad, Please someone find Rover!

A beautiful poem, for couples that have been together for many years its a shock to their system when their partners pass on and I feel its the best if the one left behind passes on quickly after as i could imagine the sad life they have to live all by themselves with just memories. Kim

Hi Kim, Yes you see many lonely old people sitting on their own, reminiscing. What you say is beautiful! Furthermore, not only are they lonely but many times incapable of looking after themselves after a certain age. Thank-you for a meaningful comment. xoxo, Jennifer

We live in memories and we feed on their very beauty, bliss, pain and wounds and.. we think that it is our balm, our consolation and joy! Pain and wounds with time they get healed and sealed.. but longing for a beauty once lived is a flame that never faints rather keeps burning inside in longing.. Amazing what you have spilled from your memory dear Jennifer.. you have masterfully and genuinely led your avid reader to your painful suffering with that beautiful twist of life in your last line!

Hi Besma, Perhaps some stage, we should write a poem together, what do you think? We could agree on a topic and write rough copies until we are both happy with what we have written. I was thinking one verse you the next me and so on. Let me know your thoughts. Love Jennifer.

The one thing I really miss about Paris was the sidewalk cafés where, no matter how deep one's thoughts might be, someone would pass along jerking one back into reality. So go back to the café and order a Campari (or Fernet-Branca if you still feel bad) so you can greet Sophie with a smile! Aloha! Rico

Rico, a great comment about the side-walk cafe and so true. The characters thoughts are interrupted in my poem. I always get so involved with them that I in fact picture the whole scene as real, almost tangible! They were together for so long (in my mind), the husband had lost himself a little. So sad, Jennifer. When you first heard the "bell," I was intrigued, then hoped it wasn't for a funeral mass. It's very hard to get over the loss of a friend. One lifelong friend of mine died last month; it was sudden. We try to focus on the good times we had with them, but loneliness is hard to avoid. A compassionate and moving poem. Hugs, Caroln

Thank-you for your comment Carolyn. Yes it is hard, and my characters in the poem had lived almost forever together , even harder. So sad about your loss., I feel for you. Cousins of ours are coming to lunch today - they lost their son 9 months ago, he committed suicide. extremely sad. xoxo, Jennifer

This has me laughing. A happy and sad ending at the same time. At least Rover will be taken care of. I'm certain of that. So no worries for our friend. Perhaps it was just a panic attack!

Hi Duke, Never actually thought of just a panic attack, clever thought, don't quite know if he wanted that, he wanted to go to his Sophie! I answered your T-rump poem by comment . Best wishes, Jennifer.

Thank-you so much Line, It is sad that after been together for decades, death pulls one apart from the other, as per our vows when we get married. It must be sad and hard! All the best, Jennifer
