It's Abstract .

It seemed at first , a colour burst Of dots and crooked lines , As I watched my "artful expert" See how he defines The colourful expression That is hidden the frame , With a twenty thousand price tag By some non-descript no-name . " IT'S GOT CHARACTER ; REAL EXPRESSION , AND I REALLY FEEL HIS PAIN . I CAN SEE JUST WHERE HE'S COMING FROM , AND WHAT HE HOPES TO GAIN . FROM THE WAY HE STROKES THE CANVASS CAN'T YOU FEEL HIS HURT AND FEAR . IT'S ALL THERE IN THE PAINTING .... OH SORRY !!!.... IT'S ABSTRACT .... MY DEAR " . I am aware it's abstract . I can hear it in your voice . With your patronising accent , And your condescending choice Of every single cliche , They thought you in art school . And you couldn't draw a line straight With a pencil and a rule . Of course the painting's abstract . How I hate that blessed word . I found it in my dictionary , Between abstain and absurd . You see ; the word , it just means nothing And I think it should be banned . Except , he framed and hung his abstract , And now he's charging twenty grand .

Reminds me of that Chris De Berg song about the painter. You are so funny!

I can't tell you how much I LOVE this! I've read lots of poems today, but it's the first that has made me smile and nod and say, "Yeah!" Thank you! Donna G.

Most excellent rhyme! I would say on the behalf of artists who paint abstract; I think they are trying to visually depict & evoke emotions and YOU the viewer are to relate to it and if anger is what it evoked the artist has still achieved since you remember it LOL Hugs & Merry Holy Days Debbie Guzzi

I think this is so funny because it is so true. My criteria, if I can do it, it is not art, but then I suppose I'm not clever enough, lol. So very well done, this is so funny. Love Heidie

Sean, I loved this the moment I first read it yesterday (glad to see your dictionary has sorted itself out btw!) it struck such a chord. [Real] art is one of my passions and the emperor's new clothes is one of my favourite stories! I waited before commenting so as to let you know that the note on my Haiku was specially for you. Love, Nigel

HA! Yeah. Abstain and abserd, exactly where it should stay - $20,000? Yikes, perhaps I can get my dog to scratch some of his feces onto a canvass and call it, Abstract? Or should I just abstain - we'll see how much time I've got this am. lol I loved this poem Mr. Kelly, I want more like this! Oh, along with haiku #26. love Kristin

Why don't you do a painting of an old chair and put a $5 million price tag on it. A painting of Whistler's mother off her rocker. There are always some fools out there thinking they are getting a bargain. Hey, I can use your plastic surgery skills on some of my wife's plastic. Have a great day. Vince

LOL! This is awesome! You are too clever Sean Kelly! That very last verse my absolute favorite! I am trying to think of something witty to say but I am not Fred or Vince (or you!) - so all I can say is, this was extremely artistically hilarious in an ABSTRACT sort of way!!! : ) Love, Shar
