It's a Hard Road, and My Wheels Are Breaking Down
I’ve chosen a hard road
One full of slings and arrows
Regrets about what happened yesterday
Anxieties over tomorrow
I’m teaching the words
To children who don’t care to hear
Enforcing the code of discipline
Before morality disappears
I’m walking a hard road
Surrounded by ice and fire
Deciding between responsibility
And quenching my desire
I’m writing the words
For Johnny Who Don’t Wanna Read
Carving my memoir into the cave wall
Where ain’t nobody freed
The path of greatest resistance –
The frontier, never taken –
How can I gain my foothold
when my confidence has been shaken?
I travel a hard road,
Even though I seldom leave home
The ones indentured to their thoughts
Are among the last to roam
I’m preaching the word
To a fantasy-congregation
Still, I will share my testament
If for a glimmer of salvation
