Written about a walking path at Burleigh Head National Park,
Someone riding a bike ahead of me must have run over this amazing spider.
It moved its last as I came upon it.  .I did watercolor of it from memory.  Nature is disappearing before we can discover it all

Came a spider from a hollow log to cross the man-made path!" No camouflage to blend her gum-nut abdomen, or twiggy legs of crimson dark. Like spinning time, a wheel of death had struck, (as if a falling star went out) and someone slightly puzzled by the final stillness, silently upset, (inwardly troubled) thought of its demise, as if she'd failed it in some way. She stared as if it might recover - gather its flimsy legs, and carry that gumnut abdomen, back into the mystery of the leafy canopy into the silent forest of her dreams Not you and not the spider could comprehend her sadness. Who would ever understand her grief?

Your poem compliments the poem so well and is a lasting tribute to the deceased spider - so many will have seen it but not thought to write about it let alone do a picture - Bravo for your thoughtfulness! hugs jan xx

Sorry she died. If she had adolescent spiders babies, her job was done anyway. This poem is a realality focus on nature. I love this story and the beautiful art tribute to a spider.

Thanks Hilda: I appreciate your empathy and your beautiful comment. The spider took me a good few hours to paint but I was happy I did it.

This is so 'beautifully sad' SuZ. We take nature for granted. Nature doesn't need humans but humans need nature. Love this poem and particularly the first two lines that for me set the scene and subject of man & nature so well. Cheers - Gary

I was so heartened to see your comment this morning, Gary: I love it when some one really gets the meaning in my poem. Will everyone realize too late how Nature is being destroyed, or will they never even know what they had? Cheers and thanks for making my day. SuZ

Every living creature deserves a chance to live a happy life. This made me very sad. I used to hate spiders, but I try to spare them by putting them out of my house when I can. You wrote this so beautifully. You drew me in and made me share the moment. Great write.

Great to have your thoughtful comment, Eileen: I agree - the poor spider gets a bad rap. I think all those horror movies in the fifties led people to fear them beyond reason or their own experience. Blessings, SuZ

Not too be unkind but there are many who would laud the death of a spider as they chill some to the bone. Your poem shows your empathy and kindness toward these little fellows. Very nice

I would never think of you as being unkind, Tom: When I lived in Australia I lived among deadly spiders and was never afraid. In most cases they never bite unless they feel threatened so that means if you poke your finger in dark places where they might be hiding you might get bit. Ha ha Thanks for reading. I appreciate that, SuZ

Dear Suzanne, Wow, you created a lot of emotions in me, like I was witnessing the sudden and unexpected death of a spider. Ahh, the fragility of life and the complexity of grief. Your words artistically show a sense of helplessness and introspection that arises when confronted with mortality. Grief is difficult to understand for all of us. Well Written, - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Dear poet friend, Daniel : your wise and encouraging comment was a joy to see this morning. You are right about the complexity of grief and apparently with each loss it exacerbates. Life is fragile and more than we can even comprehend, Have the best day. Blessing back to you. SiZ

So very descriptive how youv painted imagery and told us this experience with such detail! Sad now that i think of how the spider was taking his last breath or maybe more.. so poignant! Your sumptuous diction and way with expressing really stood out for me: and can tell you have a beautiful heart, that cares for all! I fear spiders and also cockroaches haha and spiders yes! Gosh. But this poem made me feel some sympathy for them! I would also love to see your paintings: sending you light always

Thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts on my poem. It is often said you bring to a poem your own experience when reading and this shows that you are also someone with a kind and empathetic heart. I am getting more and more encouraged to try recreating this spider in watercolor. Hugs and love, SuZ
