Inspiration's the End, Not the Means

Foremost and first, there's the perspiration
The author erases, scratches out, curses
The composer crumples up sheet after sheet
As the deadline nears, there looms desperation...

Hand-in-hand with the sweat is the aggravation
Grrr! Can't find just the right word
Something's off -- the melody, the beat --what?
Every passing moment adds to the frustration...

Suddenly, yes! It's finally ready for activation
The book is published, sold, and read
The song is heard on the air waves
Readers, listeners alike thrill -- Voila, Inspiration!

I had no idea what to do about Line's contest, and suddenly you have demonstrated "show the feeling" - SHOW THE FEELING. Wow! You have schooled me. If I entered now though, it might feel like cheating. Well done indeed! Bravo!

Gee, I keep getting these favorable comments on this one, yours being another, and I hardly thought the poem was worth posting. Go figure... As for cheating, I have Rick Singer's cellphone number if you'd like it... Whatever! :) gw

"Le mot juste" was Flaubert's mantra; it took him five years to complete Madame Bovary. Proust was another Frenchman who was longwinded. It's said he invented a special ink pen so he could write in bed without the ink running out. As for Tolstoy, his wife did a good deal of writing by way of dictation. Many thanks for reading me, sir, / M

Thank you for the education, Maurice. I had no idea about Flaubert or Proust's M.O.'s … As for reading your poems, it is a pleasure to read your wily and witty writes. A distinct pleasure and privilege. Best wishes, Gershon

I'm always amazed how hard it is to sometimes find the right word. When you find it and read the finished work, it looks so simple. I do enjoy the process. I believe the right word is just out of my reach waiting for me to grasp it and bring it home to where it belongs. Stay frosty my friend.
