Fishing Gammel Strand, Copenhagen, by Paul-Gustave Fischer (1860–1934)

Planning on a birthday treat for my man; from Polish descent, I’ll do what I can. The rollmops was just one of his vices. One bruises with rolling pin the spices: juniper berries, allspice, cloves. Sieves peppercorns mashed with freshly picked bay leaves. Onions, pickled gherkins at the ready. Following the recipe, I’m steady. Mindful that herrings have to soak for hours, the final product is worth my labours. I rush down to the nearby river quay; having to get there early is the key. On the way I slip on the cobblestones, punishing my already aching bones. But then I could have saved myself the pain as it had started to pour down with rain. They have packed up early for the morning – They didn’t want to get wet in the pouring. Those fishermen, they’re ever so fickle. Now I am really in a pickle!

Not only Pickle but a pretty Pickle. Won't mind if it's a pepper sauce.
