The long day welcomes an evening's pause
of red-feathered skies
as the last dim light of Autumn has arrived
tonight I will lie on a hillside
and imagine you
though we are miles apart we'll dance in the moonlight
beneath stars that wander above, like fine-dressed guests
and you...before me in a blue and white cotton dress
that catches the chilled air as you spin...smiling
I'll bow before you and raise my head to find your eyes
then lift you high, a silhouette against the moon
Yes, I will imagine you
in streams of flowing pictures that flood my mind
before pouring over me
a waterfall trying to wash away the years
of purple asters and roses whose beauty filled the senses
in cluttered thoughts of distant days
that come like a flock of birds diving in unison
dispersing as they fall as brown fallen leaves
that lie scattered and crumbled, tumbling away
with the curled petals of asters and roses
that cover an empty garden
where ghostly footprints vanish into a gray horizon
of flowing black clouds
where the sun never rises, and the round sky cries
leaving nothing
I will imagine what beauty was, before the storm
and I was left to walk on barren ground
that lies before the jeweled steps
leading to the throne of love
where my heart and soul once sat
next to you
