If I Were
If I were but a graceful bird,
I would fly from tree to tree.
I'd watch the world from a steeple top;
from its miseries, be free.
If I were but a meadow flower,
I'd turn my face to the sun,
and dance with joy in the summer breeze-
closing my eyes on what's to come.
If I were but a willowy tree,
I would spread my limbs out wide
to embrace the beauty of the sky;
let troubles in my shadows hide.
If I were but a running brook,
I'd be fresh and pure as Spring,
and babble on forever in joy-
oblivious to the worldly sting.
But, since I'm none of these above,
I must be content being me-
living amidst the problems on Earth;
to the answers, help find the key.
