I have had a one week training for 'fieldwork in hostile and complex places' and the scenarios during this span of time tapped in to my emotions and disturbed me as well. There was one case where a wounded companion was to be left behind (was only an act yet so real) and this affected my conscience and principles thus the birth of this poem.

My soul hangs half alive on the barbed wired fence
My body all bloody and my heart refusing to dance

My mind races to the battle field
The image of that dignified soldier waiting to be killed
I feel his faint heart beating as my cold lips depart him with a kiss
I hear my voice, “I will come back Johnny; I promise!”
There is no time to stop
There is a battle to be fought
Out of the hundreds, a few of us make it to the borders
There is no ranked officer to give us any orders
My Venerable body now a river of tears
In a glass building, opportunists celebrate with glasses of beers
My promise to return- Johnny’s only blanket in this cold
Unlike a Hollywood star, my battered body not so bold
Johnny departs his suffering in a day
Mine to be embraced each night and forever with me to stay

My soul hangs half alive on the barbed wired fence
My body all bloody and my heart refusing to dance.

No one can know unless they experience it. So well written as if you do.
