Notes About The Poem

I Went To Heaven- For Contest

To find oneself in such yearned for embrace,
no words required, all spoken with one's eyes,
with loved ones, once long lost, now face to face,
joyous eternity where no-one dies.

I know them yet I don't because I see
them with my heart where memories are kept
in times before- age and illness would be
cruel companions of theirs until they slept.

But now they glow in loving warmth and joy
the barriers time made all stripped away
before them stands the man, the youth, the boy
they lead into the light of God's new day.

On top of all this I am grateful that
by His good grace he's let me keep my cat.

Thanks Lindsay, I pray that Paradise is well stocked with sliced ham, turkey, pork, roast topside of beef and tinned mackerel. Oh, and some food for me, too. Regards, Viv

Thinking about it, Andrea, if I make it to the pearly gates and they won't let me in without my cat, I may decide not to go, and just sit on a wall on earth with her, singing all night, with people throwing shoes at me for eternity. Viv x

Thanks Sandra, as the years pass, maybe we should dwell more on the hereafter and not wait until the next funeral we attend. Thus may we find comfort. Thanks for stopping by, Viv x

Leave it to you to wrap up a beautiful sonnet with one of your signature, clever and funny lines!! You always remind me to keep it simple and NEVER take it all too seriously. A sure winner... Merry Christmas Viv! - Tim

Thanks, Tim, I like to think that joy (short sharp burst, like a cigarette) and real love ( that ocean swell of contentment) complement each other, and that the Lord thinks the same- when (if he permits me) I arrive in paradise, he'll forgive my cheap, tatty luggage, namely, my life. Blessings to you and yours, Viv

I have a feeling if I'm fortunate by his grace to make it to paradise that we won't see our loved ones as we remembered them, they will be different, but we will know them- a bit like when you pick up the phone, you're not hearing the other person's voice, since it is just a stream of electricity, but you know it's them. thanks for commenting, njeri. Enjoyed this 'heavenly' sonnet, Viv! I am so pleased to know that pets are allowed in heaven; heard that down bellow they get roasted! On doing my calculations, it appears that there will be more pets than good souls in heaven:) // paul

You're probably right, Paul, we Saints who strive for eternity may well find ourselves pacing the hereafter with little blue poopbags. For our sins. Regards, Viv

Once misheard over here, when they die, all pets go to Devon. Which is not bad, it has lots of nice beaches. Viv x
