I Was the First Civilization
I was the first civilization and had the advantage then
Kinship and bonds distilled in right revelation of deity
Native wisdom lacked neither spirtual love nor piety
Ours was the golden not cast in element trite as gold
Winnowed of the material asp, nothing here was sold
Interrupting the land's communication, I bared, descend
Looted when imitated first, and the image substituted me
Leaving me invisible as the pariah new men and history
Ours was nothing again, our half memory razed by fire
Fooling themselves they still could not assimilate desire
Contesting who they became among themselves, I am
Only saved because the shadow needs still the original
Loop this, for still inexplicably hangs now the true lamb
Offered, and yet still the assimilation is made marginal
New World visions of power replacing him, but first we
Initial civilizers must be removed for that dream to endure
Angst with this Africa demonized becomes invisible and poor
Listening echoes of mutilates preserved in brine of sea
Haggling still the sea peoples mix iron into holy clay
A man must know his master's will to come to sovereign day
Therapy-less we in the mirror seek unconsolably to forgive
Europe with its stolen cross reflecting the dark derisive
