Listen to poem:

I Wandered Lonely As a Rose

I wandered lonely as a rose by Autumn's gate
as I lay there in still repose, petals strewn
I fell apart like dessert moon;

The scent that once perfumed my reign
were mellowed by September's rain
I drifted distant in the woods.

All my husks fell to the soil
each petal dried right where it stood
No gardener's hand of hue embroiled
that filament that quivered slow
like dying embers of nights glow

Shambled, windblown as the wind
beneath the last of summer's ray
regretfully I did rescind

As summer lost her fired splay
I wandered,
Lost and alone like a rose,
until the end of summer froze.

This is indeed a lament - the lament of a withering rose."The scent that once perfumed my reign was mellowed by September's rain ". Soaked in rain and scorched in heat, the poor flower was fated to lie unnoticed. Powerful poem . Wish you Rose, all the best in the contest.

Thank you for your insightful comment Valsa. Yes indeed like the rose we too have a day of birth and a day of expiration. The secret is to live much while we're still here.

Wow, this is sublime, I just love 'filaments that quivered slow' and 'windblown as the wind' - so mournful, and the closing lines come together so perfectly, best wishes for the contest~

We are like roses, we bloom we live and one day we die, but the in between scents of us, is what takes our breath away, thanks for reading my friend :)

From the dust of petals roses return fresh...for their laurels of thorn. When stepping from the ledge of blossom the soul is given wings...and soars for eternity. Enchanting read, Rose. Although this poem exhibits oodles of intelligence and skill, I often think the beauty of great poetry, in itself, is reason enough. Greatness here! Thank you.

Thankyou Michael for dropping in, Roses imitate humans we all have life, scent and dying power, except the rose gets mulched to the ground, and we rise above, like a dear old priest once told me, we all make it to heaven, some of us limping some of us straight as an arrow, but we all go t through that narrow gate. take care
