I Remember September

I was born in September A long time ago I shall always remember September as so. Two years later, it hurts me to say War was declared, taking my childhood away. Everything changed on September the first, I was born in London, where the Blitz suffered worse, I have many tales I could tell Of the loss and sadness It was a living Hell. Everyone tried to put on a brave face, But not all could stand the fast pace Of this treacherous rat race. A neighbour of ours could not stand it anymore, On hearing of the death of her beloved son. She hung herself on the kitchen door. Through all this mayhem and despair Even as a child, I was very aware Of the sharing and caring shown To all, so no one ever felt alone. It's a pity it takes a war To make us realise what we are born for, God did not put us on this Earth to fight, The only way to peace is to unite. So many things that I remember Of the unnecessary horrors of the war That started and ended in September.

Wow. An indelible impression made on you from the very first day of life. It is evident how that experience, both the horror of it and the kindnesses done within it, has shaped your life and your thinking. Thanks, Shirley. A fascinating write. Peace and Hope, Gershon

No one should know what it is like to bid their mother goodbye when she goes for groceries for fear that they may never see her again, yet not a day goes by without children fearing that, so mankind has not made much progress at all! Aloha!

G'Day Rico. Thank you for your comments. I agree we can't progress without change, and nothing seems to change.
