I No Longer Feel I Belong

That other world is out there, beyond the quiet I keep bubbled around me, the noise growing louder along the flag strewn streets, banging drums marshaling the inflamed minds of the masses. Something has gone wrong. I no longer feel I belong. I keep my door closed and curtains drawn to shut out the anger from a passing mob, reinforce the boundaries of my home with walls of books. They have marched through and littered all the lovely places where I once walked, covered beauty with garish signs. Something has gone wrong. I no longer feel I belong. Out there, all seems to be of no worth unless shackled to a cause. Tribal camps yell obscenities across the lines of division and commandeer their gods to mouth a sanctioned hate. Something has gone wrong. I no longer feel I belong. And what can I do but play with a frail voice and think of what could be and on dark days, take hope and defiance in the gentle arms of Emily Dickinson's poetry.

In the pages of many books, I've often found shelter from a world that seems to ask too much and gives too little. It's a safe harbor from my woes where I can leave my worries behind... if just for a while. Congratulations on this one becoming potd. Forgive my lack of commenting lately. I haven't been around.

Books and literature I think provide an anchor in turbulent times...give perspective to the distortions that sometimes overwhelm. Many thanks dear Lin for yr comments..as always, supportive and thoughtful. Take care, Paul

Congratulations on not just poem of the day but on such a well executed poem, which I am forever hopeful touches the hearts and minds of anyone who reads it, I know from childhood what division and hate looks and feels like from my childhood in Ireland, division has no victors only losers, I seek solace in the great war poets as sometimes without looking back we fail to move forward , your message covers aspects of our lives today, simply being on here to our respective political landscapes,

Feel honored to receive such thoughtful and sensitive commentary Daniel. Appreciate the time you have given the poem... I was in two minds whether to post or not, but I think the general sense of dislocation and unrest that prevails argued the case for. Share yr views on the toxicity of division to serve political ends. Take care, Paul

Thankyou Brandy for your comments. Indeed you are correct in how we choose to be with those who reinforce the positive values we believe in. The poem is a call out to the destructive forces that alienate us and undermine our humanity...becoming more widespread and fostering division. Value your thoughtful words dear Brandy...take care, Paul

Thanks Tom...I guess the poem is about a sense of alienation felt when a great many exhibit a loss of perspective and humanity, when a o called cause overrides the intrinsic value of the person. When messaging becomes focussed on emotional gratification at the expense of others...dangerous territory. Regards, Paul

Paul, as always, a delight to see you with Poem of the Day. So many of us join you in the cry of we don't belong and after all we are travellers. But thank God for your beautiful poetic insight, alongside dear Emily. I doff my cap (fav)

Value your thoughtful comments Sam. I guess the poem is simply a refusal to get carried away with all the doctrinaire stuff, basic humanity gets thrown out the window when the citizenry trade common sense for illusion. Life then is undervalued. ED is a poet who exposes our precious and true nature.. take care my friend.

Me, too. I don't belong either... And, btw, Emily Dickinson is absolutely my all-time favorite poet. Hands down! Congrats on POTD, Paul! 'Emily is Family,' Gershon

Funny you mention 'surgeons precision.' One of my favorite poems of ED is about those surgeons who had best be careful with their knife, 'for underneath their fine incisions // stirs the culprit -- Life! :) Gershon

Ah ...seems a shared sense dear Gershon. Unfortunately the loudness grows along with a corresponding depletion in humanity. ED has always been my go to poet...she uses words with a surgeons precision and seems to brush the hem of the divine in some of her poems. Take care my friend, Paul

Dear Paul, Congratulations on this POTD which is painfully relatable to so many out there. I especially liked "play with a frail voice", so well said. Blessings and enjoy your day of recognition which is well deserved.

Thankyou Nancy for your kind and thoughtful words. Wrestled with this poem but the sense of alienation from all the excesses and division ( a global affliction) prompted me to exercise a voice. The humanity and soulful reflections of ED in stark contrast to the loudness of the world. Take care, Paul

and as history repeats itself the voices of the "quiet" poet warriors resounds throughout the battlefields....of shuttered minds and darkened hearts....A masterful write Paul

Hello Paul, Congratulations on POTD! You said it so well that it is hard to fit into a world that has become increasingly hostile, divided, and devoid of beauty. It is wonderful to go back and read the masters to help us see the creativity of life. Congrats again!! - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The doctrinaire nature of what masquerades as a solution to all ills robs us of our humanity me thinks. Always a danger when division is used as a weapon. Many thanks Daniel for reading and for your thoughtful comments my friend.
