I Know There Is a God

I know there is a God
Because He is the only one who
Counts the tears my soul cries
When my body and mind are numb
From the barbs of enemies and swords of friends.

I know there is a God
Because when I finally break the surface
Of my pain, gasping for understanding
To breathe humanity back into my being,
He throws me a lifeline and tows me to a place without judgment.

I know there is a God
Because when the elevator shoots to the top floor,
Butterflies churning, blood turned to bubbling adrenaline
He meets me in the stars, and never pushes the down button.

I know there is a God
Because I have faced the darkness of night that doesn't promise a sunrise in the morning,
And I have lost pieces of me to that eternal blackness
But remained whole, and felt the assurance that there was yet a torch burning on the other side that I would see again.

I know there is a God
Because undeserving of even the slightest reward for my last-place finish in the human race, He presented to me the most precious of trophies. I hugged my trophy close, and vowed to coach her to a better finish . . . Eyes on the prize . . . Not running, but stopping to notice every step, to relate to every face, to find and fill needs like potholes in the track. But most of all, to show people she knows there is a God.

Cindi, what a talent with words you do have-and so glad to have you a part of Soup. You brought back a dark memory of mine and you conquered your race the same as I-through prayers and the love of Christ. Just to know he knows my name and answered my need. Thank you for the write my dear friend.

Your poem touches my heart, Cindi, especially since I lost both my husband and one of my sons. I can see that it was written from the depths of your own heart, and the theme reminds me of lyric poetry. A beautiful and inspiring poem.

Arlene, Your comment humbles me greatly. "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet." Your loss is unfathomable to me, and I thank you so much for reading and commenting on my work.i look forward to reading yours.

Cindi, the idea behind your poem is genuine but it lacks the poetic construction and feels more like verse.Anyway it's a nice effort by you and I like it God is There Everywhere Ask Him or Not He'll fulfill His promise.

When we're at our deepest depths, that's when we know he's there. And in our highest heights, it's to him we look and stare. And funny how when in between we're left to make our way. But all you ever have to do to know that he is there is pray. Thanks for reaffirming faith in us readers Cindi. Peace. :)

Cindi what an excellent poem I too can relate to this poem exactly - God will continue to always bless you my sister in Christ and I can also relate to other ladies when they do not have understanding - will try to knock others to their level of low understanding and self esteem especially in the church - not all women but some do this - I do understand that! Like you I just learn to keep my focus on God alone Amen!

Hi Cindi, yes indeed , there is a God and your poem reminds me of Psalm 139. It's great that He is always there for us in light and darkness. Just the knowing is enough. Great poem. Edward
