How Should I Know

My pretty child how should I know, How cold winter's blight would blow; To draw you in with such dispair, When he sought your presence there; How a lonely lady should come and go, When love had left, how could she know. How might I know dear little child, When lovely springtime looked and smiled; Gentle was the nodding roses breath, Who never knew the trance of death. Like she who stood in glad surprise, When she imagined love in your eyes; I did not know time so swift could pass, As memories in a mirror's glass. My darling child, how would I know, How long I watched you come and go; How I waited to see you for so long, When all that happened was so wrong. You came softly in a gown so white, And filled the silence of my night; I looked but found one lonely star, Then knew how far heaven's gardens are.

A bemoaning of unanswered dreams. Sweet little eyes of hope and a face that beams. We pray they never know the angst. We've learned so well with heartless thanks. Hello Elizabeth. Hope to read a new one soon. :)

In the clouds of vague remission. I am perplexed by your submission. The subject winds through curves and rows. I'm not sure if anyone knows. Some put their stamp to take a guess. But sometimes, sometimes more is less. I'm just rhyming, don't take this to seriously.

What a very sad and poignant write this is, Elizabeth-- to lose a child is definitely one experience that no parent has to bear, but sadly it does happen and one can seek a bit of comfort in words. You've brought that pain here so eloquently, I really liked how you put this in question form. We never will know, but yes, they do keep watch--I would like to think so. btw hope this helps, I think that's "despair"... Very touching write & thank you as well for your encouraging words in my poems :)

Did you lose a child, Elizabeth? It's said this is the hardest thing anyone can experience. You have such beautiful descriptions of her and I especially like the reference to the rose "who never knew the trance of death." Very touching poem, my friend. And then seeing her as a star in heaven's garden! As for your comments, yes, my husband John died when I was 24. It's hard to rebuild after such an experience. This would make an excellent entry for the sad poem contest. Love, Carolyn

WoW! What a poignant piece this is. I got the feeling of a mother mourning for her daughter who had been done wrong in love and had died somehow. Either murdered or committed suicide. So sad but wel written. Good Job. If for the contest should be a sure winner. God Bless, JB
