HOW CAN I PRETEND : PART 1
HOW CAN I PRETEND ?
PART 1
How can I pretend when
flutters across my chest only
prickle as your thought
arrives with doubt or hope
What is hope anyway ?
A flimsy wish built upon
a matrix I no longer
attune to as Mantis
explores my device
How can I pretend when
staring at a mouldy ceiling at
3am listening to God giving
instructions in damp winter’s
Grace claiming my ring
finger with a tree-agate
circle I barely comprehend
How can I pretend when
I no longer traverse
backwaters or corridors
waiting for an “Ay” or
respond to voices at
iron gate gathering yellow
rays when they cannot
manifest their own
When Source gifts a
sequinned heart
I’ve remembered and
released with poise
writhing burn memories
Ouma Na scalded
both our faces tripping
over frayed mat carrying
pot of boiling bath soak
fire and water making war
on newly painted wall
Pretence knows no fat
it has to drown down
mouse drain
Meridians released
encoded nodes holding
forgotten memories of burnt
hair sticking papyrus skin
as I was bundled into
double-decker bus which
almost did not arrive
hustled to a clinic outside
dusty township fences
All I could see was
Ouma’s faraway Malaysian
apertures staring aghast
thinking the fault was hers
as Mother dreamt Piscean
dreams in new maisonette
on an old bed upstairs
Pretence lies coffined
cold
