Hope Painting GF Watts

This poem is based on the painting of George Frederick Watts in 1886 Hope An angel sits above our world, Life’s mirador, Curtains splayed, a tragic play unfurls, Hanging on a single thread of hope, Upon her bow, a silent note, precariously Above the Earth alone. Wistful, she hangs her head, Silks blackest thread, cradling shadows of men to sleep, Each flightless soul, nestling, curled in keep, Within no peace of mind they reap. Selene’s Rain, Hope does not cleanse my heart Of sadness, nor whisper with eloquence such surety of sleep That serenades the unstill madness, And so prevent my mind to follow into obscure oblivion. A million tossed and turned scrambled voices heard, And another million dreams spurned, As Hope looks on her tears drowning, Swelling the seas and oceans of our world. Before I sleep I wake to a morn a day precursed Like a wilting flower, dead beyond, before A single entity realises my existence, and a life of no importance. Transpire then expire, what numbness to these limbs, Of just and equal thought, breathe life into this day, Laugh….Lust…..Love…..Live..... Dispense, destroy, kiss farewell all shackles of despair. And listen…..listen….listen, deep within. Inner unknown pervading, of unworldly delight Ponder a life to challenge, to rival destiny, Your redolence lingering lustfully, your willingness To please, make pure, impure, create, destroy, love, hate, a myriad Of uncensored dreams await, with baited breath…stolen From your lips, I keep a silent thought, All possibilities through Hope explored, To indulge, to luxuriate, evoke both sight and will. For life as love are never ours to own, but lend. Steal as justice is not just but blind, kiss life Before despair makes you its home. Listen as she plays her lyre, each godly inspired note……. Listen can you hear from her mirador above the earth, Where alone she sits…….Upon a single thread of Hope. Embracing luminous rays as Aurora awakens in the east?
