Anishinaabe is our spirituality, a system of life beliefs, blending harmony, spirits and nature. We are guided by mothers, fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, elders and our spirit ancestors above. Their teachings, and stories form the basis of what has been passed down for generations, first written on birch bark scrolls. Stories, ceremonies and symbols are important to us. We are taught from children, harmony and balance, respectful behaviour. Each must experience vision quests, fasting in solitude to find our spiritual guide. The seven grandfathers in the sky teach us that the eagle represents unconditional love and compassion and the wolf humility, the bear is bravery and courage, the raven is honesty, the buffalo respect, the beaver wisdom, the turtle truth. the drums are beating around a fire I dance . . . an eagle flying My mother and grandmother were storytellers, I would listen enthralled by their voices, perhaps it is the reason I am a writer. The spirit of our Holy Creator filled me with the ethics and morals to live my life in spirit. We believe spirit inhabit the world in animals, plants, the elements, and the celestial bodies.
