History Repeats In Dakota Territory

In my early teens (late 60's)
I remember it all
began
in my mind

Dad was driving us into
downtown Minneapolis
for church I think,

up ahead, a block or so,
the bob-lights on top of
2 cop cars was twirlin'
and speakers were loopin'
that open-sore noise

then it went silent

but what caught our eyes
was, the 2 cops were standing
over a Native American sleeping
against a wall,

they picked him up,
all limp arms and legs

and chucked him into the
open trunk of their squad
car like they were swinging

gunnysacks of taters

dad was the first to say
something as we passed
by when the light changed

"the Indians got it rough
here in town, jimmy,
gotta
help 'im when
you can, son"

little has changed,
Dakota Oil injustice,

now near me puppet
heads
allowing pipelines
to disgrace sacred
Treaty Lands.

People gonna rise-up
again, and get water-blasted
off their feet & stuck with
them stingin' dam electric

stun-frizzle wires

like we were some
kinda human chimera
that needs to be
extinguished.

dads been gone 12 yrs
now

"gotta help 'im
when you
can, son"

...gotta
help 'im
when
I can

Your poem is very touching, Jim, and well written. Native Americans have never been treated fairly and now there have been efforts to prevent them from voting in one state. Not sure if it was North Dakota or another state, but the injustice continues. Thanks for reading one of my poems.

This is such a terrible situation, but you have managed to make this poem about it inspiring at the same time... Your father's statement, "gotta help 'im/ when you/ can, son" followed by your determination to do just that- is lovely and heart-warming! Those pipelines are a travesty. We need more people willing to speak out & make a difference!

Great write. Makes me think of the things I often witnessed here in South Africa, and of how my Dad always taught and practiced a similar humanity. Very good piece.

Thanks Lawrence, I am a big fan of South African (now in USA) writer Alexandra Fuller, her stories are wonderful!

Hi James, you did pick the best form for this piece. I find free verse gives more scope to a poetic piece. Your Father was a wise man indeed James. It is so sad that people can still be put upon in this 21st Century. It is good that people such as yourself can highlight the plight of others. Excellent, strong work James. Have a wonderful Monday. Your friend....Mike.

Thanks Mike...remember "Tank Man" from Tiananmen Square Uprising yrs ago? (He disappeared, yea right!) Media never showed film of the same thing during the Dakota Pipeline Protest on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation....(over 300 ppl injured) Winona LaDuke, in full Ceremonial Dress, stood down a line of approaching troop-filled Humvee's....unreal! you can google it tho!

G'day James … story telling, particularly in poetry is my favoured preference. Much can be said that is straight to the point without side tracking. This hurtful business happens to many of the indigenous folk in Australia too - education, tolerance, and understanding is something rarely taught - Lindsay

Oh yes...I know your indigenous communities have suffered, I do own some mulga-wood 'killer sticks' (non-returning) made by Aussie Native Community Members...

I agree with the narative style, Lindsay...other times....other forms! I never know till the poem starts to flow, writes itself...sometimes if the magic is described...more lyrical....if subject...forms of iamb...

A very sensitive and poignant write, James; lots of injustice in this word. Your dad sounds like he was a wonderful, wise father. Amazing how smart our parents become as we grow older. great poem!

Love the story, James, says so much of these troubled times, and past times too, i'm afraid it not just in your part of the world, but world wide. So good to read your poem though, there is a need for highlighting...The Captcha is interesting after reading,,,DAD

Thank you for your comments my long time friend...we live in precarious times, with oppression ever present, I pray daily for inspiration to heed God's word of compassion & grace...

This is a really deep and excellent poem, we can learn alot from it and sure can change ourselves, our action will insoire others and it will change others, before crying for change, we must firstly change ourselves, only then we have the right to ask for a change, good luck my friend and I really enjoyed reading this wonderful poem of yours

Thanks for stopping by, Faraz...frequently, in group conversations among my peers, I need to educate & defend ill-words aimed at our Native Brothers & Sisters, just because they can operate casino's does not justify more oppression...

jimbo, when will america ever accept that the real owners of this land belong to these tribes?... love the respect you have shown; a fearless write from an empath like you!... huggs

Powerful, insightful poetry, Marshall! Your keen, compassionate write shines an illuminating light of understanding on this sad plight. Oppression will go dark one day, this I truly believe. Keep the love and knowledge flowing, brother. Love and more love always.

Such a sad situation for the natives, and the pipeline is all about money, that is why Trump is pushing for it... Sad how these people have had everything taken from them.. Truthful but sad insight to their discrimination.. well expressed James..

Thanks for stoping by, Silent One...situation is dire once more, media did not show epic photo from recent standoff at Dakota Access Pipeline protest, Wynona LaDuke in full ceremonial attire blocking encampment bulldozers, similar to Chinese "Tank Man" media is complicit!
