Hindsight 20 20

A young girl of twenty,
Starry eyes with wonder,
wishing on the brightest star.
A love like no other
came that fateful evening of New Year’s Eve.
A chance encounter, love at first sight.
Butterflies in the pit of her stomach,
slow dancing to “Hot Child in the City.”
Eye to eye—no one else in this space,
talking for hours seemed more like minutes.
Slipping outside, a goodnight kiss
beneath the fallen snow,
only feeling the warmth of his embrace,
a promise of a better tomorrow
with love in tow.
The one-sided romance is no longer;
A commitment not meant to be,
many sleepless nights,
reliving the memory of that first night.
Solemn, closed like a new rose,
the thorns stinging but creating an inkling of hope.
Like a newborn baby bird,
the awakening of a new season,
a purpose, a dream, the sun shining even in the shadows.
You can move mountains with the flutters of love.
Signs all over, a twinkle in our eyes,
lunch hour connections, escapades for two.
The pain of first love now turned into “Thank God for Unanswered Prayers.”
A new beau, a shiny new ring,
a courthouse “I do” on a warm summer day,
a ready-made family grew by two.
The years flew by,
building a loving home
side by side, united we stood.
The baby daughter is now living among the stars.
The two pillars now older and gray,
still united with a wedding band.
Hand in hand, a purpose at hand.

Oh yes, you hit the nail on the head! I believe everyone must have a similar story that taught this lesson... to thank God for unanswered prayers. God always answers, he said, yes, no, or wait. But when we beg for the yes and he stands firm with no... sometimes we look back and praise him for that for sure!!! Ty for entering! Xoxo

Wonderful, Lise. Now I have a small idea how to do this. I have only one thing I can think to do and it will be hard to write about it poetically. I really relate to this one of yours. I had a very brief crush that was with a wonderful person from another country. I can't get it out of my mind sometimes how special our brief bond was, and even now I never found it though I have been married almost 50 years. Life is so strange.

Dear Lise, this is so beautiful and heartfelt how youv written in such a seamless manner of love and how youv captured that moment when butterflies fluttered within you, the ending is soulfully moving too! I love especially “ Solemn, closed like a new rose, the thorns stinging but creating an inkling of hope.” really stood out for me! Absolute pleasure reading your work! You have a way with metaphors and painting imagery! Keep writing~ sending you light always~

As an ’80s child, that was the actual song playing while we slow danced. No worries, that song is now just a great song to sway to the music. No strings attached.
