"Going to keep on trying 'til I reach my highest ground." ~ Stevie Wonder
Once, when I was twelve,
I turned a knob on a plastic box
and heard the magic it unlocked.
Infectious rhythm -
what was once still life began to move -
it was in that irresistible groove.
Yes, I still remember
when I first heard Stevie Wonder say,
Superstition Ain't the Way.
More than anyone,
he did so much more than just survive.
He celebrated the joy to be alive.
I was in college
when I then heard Stevie Wonder say,
"you'll be dancin' to the break of day".
Man's greatest joy is love,
and we can feel it in My Cherie Amour,
when he sings for whom his heart beats for.
Stevland Hardaway Morris saw
beauty, more than one who can see
when, Isn't She Beautiful, sang he.
His spirituality ran deep.
In They Won't Go..., suggested he,
"no one will keep me from my destiny".
Though in one way, he can't see,
he enlightens us with an enchanted sound.
Stevie inspires us to Higher Ground.
