Hidden Beauty

Can there be beauty in my toes, Where stubbornly a fungus grows? I never thought it could be true. I try to hide it with my shoe. Its purpose, not yet discovered— I try hard to keep it covered. From large toe to the next it spread, And now I look at both with dread. It wants to grow against the norm, My toenail with misshapen form, Knows the wild ways it wants to grow, And now it has a mate in tow! I’ve vowed to make a sacred oath To kill this hated fungal growth, But I now see the beauty of My wayward toes denied of love Are like the people we might hate And I’ve learned to appreciate Diversity against the norm, Well taught to me through my toes’ form; That each of us must be unique, And there’s the beauty that I seek! As my fungal toe and its mate, Which I condemned as reprobate, Conceals within their ugly form, Their freedom’s right against the norm! © 1-18-15 ~First Place~ For Hidden Beauty Poetry Contest Sponsored by Rhonda Johnson-Saunders *Meant as a metaphor for those who don't appear as normal looking!

Rhonda said she wanted something really original so that thought came to me about writing about something most would not think of writing about. Thanks Jan. : )

I have heard of thinking outside the Box, but Gee Connie, you think inside the shoe. I love those writers that just write what comes to them.

I love how one can find beauty in the mundane and common place - if that is not a signature of youth I don't know what is. To think deeply on what is, on the surface, simple... maybe someday I'll take your advice and write an Ode to Nose Hair... lol.

Sometimes, we do need to look a bit deeper to discover the true beauty in all things... A very creative poem with wonderful couplet rhyming. Very nicely written, Connie. Good luck in Rhonda's contest!

Blimey! what a coincidence. Since I played Soccer when I was younger I always had trouble with my big toenails, so much they had to come off. Then they grew back, one ok, the other like a talon, which falls off every eighteen months. Yep, I relate to this poem totally. Cool write Connie, James :) :)

I love this one! I don't have pretty dainty feet, and my toes are all wonky but I don't care. I hate shoes and go barefoot whenever I can. I just don't paint my toenails so I don't draw attention to them.

Everyone has something about themselves they don't like, but I think we become more accepting as we age. I know I have. Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks so much. Hugs, Connie

Very clever! And I love the message, being one who never wears sandles.. Second toe longer than the first.. I hate that!! Lol.. Guess I have to learn to embrace the uniqueness.. Hugs, my friend.. Arlene

wow, Connie, this was super interesting. I never see you write too often this way. It's also kind of humorous, and I think you can SO write that way!! I hope I can be inventive as you in this particular contest!! Oh about KFC. that was an old poem I probably put on PFT years ago. It was for the humorous contest/

Beauty sometimes dwells even in a beast. For often we miss much because of our prejudices. When if searched deeper we find beauty in things we first reject. More love and kindness with less hate leads to a happier life. Bravo, your poem is great, now see a doctor--ugly toes just grossly blows..lol

Your word choice is good and the message sent and the method used (although not conventional), is strong and emotional. Emile.
