Hicks In the Sticks

My mama always told me that
"Hicks in the sticks"
was a thing way back when.
Timeless as mortar and bricks.

But who woulda thought
that someday she'd marry one?
Bet she didn't say hick no more,
her name itself was now and pun.

I'd always be jealous of other kids
and their long and extravagant surnames.
Mine might as well a cough or a sneeze,
p'raps I'll change it if I ever come to fame!

Sure ain't no Guadalajara
or Lamoureux.
Truth be told It'd sound more interesting
to just call me Mr. So 'n' So.

If you look far enough down the family line
you'll find the spelling changes... they ditch the C-K-S.
Can you believe that my already minuscule name
used to be a whole two letters less?

It's a running joke at work that it sounds
more appealing to the opposite sex.
So if I run into someone I like I'll be like
"Call me Mr. Hicks... with an X".

But I guess I'm stuck with it
'til the day they put me in the ground.
I'll be a "Hicks in the sticks" to you if y' fancy.
What's all this fuss about a sound?

NOTE: I wanted to write something reminiscent of Jack Ellison's quirky humor.

I can see the Jack in that. I'm all warm and fuzzy just reading about someone appreciating him so much. I wrote "I got Jack" for/about him and I'm tearing up just thinking about it. ~x

A witty entertaining take on your surname, Timothy! Definitely not unsophisticated :) At least yours can be pronounced easily, unlike mine (which mistakenly is compared to callous)! // paul

Thanks Paul. I wrote a dedication to you awhile back, utilizing your surname for wordplay (though I, in truth, have no idea the true pronunciation behind it!)

Timothy, wow! I can't believe I forgot to thank you for the nice and silly poem you entered in my contest. A late late late CONGRATULATIONS. Thank you for the smirks and smiles your poem gave me while reading it. Hope you can forgive me, it is not like me to stoop low and diss all who support me or my contest. Even if I get no response, everyone still matters, and I try my best... Love love LINDA...

Haha... no sweat Linda! I don't ever really expect to get high rating on the contests, I just have fun with them... it must be a pain to congratulate each and every contestant individually, though! Thanks for the message and kind comments :)

Kids will try to find any excuse to make fun of somebody... sad. I don't hate my name by any means... I'm just saying it's one of the dullest names I can think of... lol! Lamoureux is really fancy sounding though... nothing wrong with that one!

Ha ha, each name has it's challenges, I used to be called lambchops or Lamaramadingdong when the song came out. Sometimes simple is best. Enjoyed the poem and my name being added to the verse.

Haha...entertaining. At least Hicks isn't all that common...your last name could be Smith!

I guess you're right! Smith is worse... (lol). Now if your name was JOHN as well... then that'd just be cruel.

You did find a way to write a poem that comes close to Jack's hilarious humor! You have mastered the art of poking fun at yourself and making it quite funny! I like your surname, it's pretty cool in my book! So whether or not you change your surname you will still always be a Hicks deep in your heart, no matter what you may want to do! This is a comparative piece to Jack's witty humor, a very hilarious poem, Great Work!!

Haha... The part about changing my last name is all in good fun... it's never something I'd actually do! It'd seem a bit disrespectful to my dad to do that... I'm glad you enjoyed my Ellison-esque poem... lol!

I think you've succeeded in the humour Mr so n so, personally I always wondered if you were perhaps prone to the hiccups lol. My best friend at school had the surname Poole, bet you can guess what we went through lol. Your turn to poke fun at my name. Take care, Richard
