Here I Still Am
Here I Still Am
By Elton Camp
Dispelling ignorance & dispensing knowledge
I’ve taught thousands of students at the college
When the older ones of them I happen to meet
They act surprised that I’m still around to greet
If their facial expression I have correctly read
What they mean is, “I thought you were dead.”
But though there has passed many a decade
So far, the Grim Reaper I’ve managed to evade
True, I can’t take stairs two at a time anymore
And I dare not hike in the woods as I did before
But my thinking is right and my memory clear
I sure hope that Alzheimer’s I don’t need to fear
I am still capable of decisions and driving my car
As when young, I haven’t wrecked, at least so far
With my clouded lenses surgically taken out,
I can again enjoy reading and looking about
As long as my obituary you haven’t read
You may safely assume that I’m not dead
