Her Mask

She wears a mask to hide what's best in her, and since she only does what others say, she feels that she is stifled; it’s as if the mask she wears is getting in the way. How rosy are the lips of this young woman, but she does not perceive herself to be a person with significance, and so a silent beauty is all we can see. Behind the mask this woman wears so well is someone of great worth; she has no guile. If only she would but unmask herself and show the loveliness of her sweet smile! Your lady is a woman of many layers and motivations. She reminds me of a girl from my class who slowly revealed her layers as she matured and took off her mask. She became an amazing, accomplished woman. All of us love getting to know her.

Your poem has a layer of current times in that we are all having to wear masks. But there's also a timelessness to it in the sense of hiding our insecurities behind something superficial and safe. I love your poem of much depth.

These masks certainly hide our smiles, but the eyes tell we are being tortured having to wear them in the heat of summer. This should do great in the contest Andrea. Are masks mandatory in Utah? They are here. xxoo

I have the one doctor in the area whose office does not require them. he is a brilliant natural doctor and there is a sign on the receptionist's desk saying "we will wear a mask if it makes you comfortable" The waiting room rarely has many people in it, so there is no need of a mask. I wish all places would be more reasonable about masks.

the poem is metaphorical but I like your interpretation too, Connie. Masks here are becoming more and more mandatory like in BIG places (Smith's grocery store, Walmart, etc). I think small businesses are not making a big deal of it. Certain counties are making you wear them everywhere. I think CA laws, like making people wear them to go to your mailbox, are ridiculous.

So sad when a woman like this hides her “significance”. Nicely penned.

We never know what’s behind the mask. Do we Petal? Take care Richard

Very nice, Andrea. Masks can hide the good as well as the bad. Best wishes in the contest. Soup mail. Hugs, Carolyn
