Heartbreak Peddler

I peddled a song round the streets And found that not many were keen The solemn church bell or the shout of cannon Or at least the selfseeking drone Of selling and buying and lying down prone Was more to their taste In haste I switched wares And peddled long shares Making over the song To the young fool who happened along I hear he has gone to the desert and sings The same song and lo and behold It ‘s breaking the heart in the young and the old
