Hard Times
When I look back to when times were hard,
When all of us kids used to play in the yard.
When Mum had no money to give us a treat,
When she needed it to put shoes on our feet.
When we sat and watched the other kids eating,
When all we could hear was our tummies rumbling.
When tea was beef dripping on toasted bread,
When this was all Mum could give us before bed.
When morning came we got more of last nights tea
When we were at school our dinners were free,
When our Dad had left us for reasons beyond me.
When the hard times came I never did know,
When Mum raised us 5 kids the best she knew how.
When sweets were a surprise if they came,
When, to us kids life was still just a game.
When I grew older, in my teenage years
When I realized why Mum shed those tears.
When I found out that all the love I missed,
When I couldn't remember if I had been kissed.
When Mum finally died I was a grown up Dad
When the hard times came, though which we had come.
When I look back and remember I was glad we had Mum.
